The Massachusetts Money Management Program is a free service that
assists low income elders who are at risk of losing their independence due to an inability
to manage their own finances. Jointly sponsored by the AARP, Mass Home Care, and the
Executive Office of Elder Affairs, this program is operated locally through Mystic Valley
Elder Services.
Through the Money Management Program, a trained, insured,
and supervised volunteer is matched with an older adult who needs help
with bill paying and other routine financial tasks. Available services
range from organization and keeping track of financial and medical insurance
papers to establishing a budget, helping write checks, balancing checkbooks,
interpreting statements, and sorting mail.
These services are offered free of charge to individuals
who qualify. Eligibility is based on age (must be 60 or older), asset limitations,
and income guidelines
of $23,475 for single persons and $33,217 for married couples. These guidelines
are accurate as of January 2008 and are subject to changes.
