Come and Meet those Dancin' Feet at MVES' Theatre Event!
Come and meet
Those dancin’ feet
On the avenue I’m taking you to
42nd Street!
MVES is thrilled to present 42nd Street, our sixth annual theatre event to benefit the MVES Gap Fund! On Saturday, May 21, 2011 event sponsors and theatre goers will dance their feet to the Stoneham Theatre for a night of entertainment that will support local elders.
Event proceeds will support the MVES Gap Fund, a $1 million endowment being established to help elders who fall into a service eligibility gap. The Gap Fund is providing home care services to an average of 30 older adults each month who otherwise would go without the services they need. The endowment has passed its halfway mark, with over $525,000 raised toward its $1 million goal!

Be Prepared! September is National Preparedness Month
The thought of experiencing a potential disaster or emergency is really scary. Being unprepared for that disaster is even scarier. So take action! Arm yourself with preparedness! September, National Preparedness Month, is an important time to make sure you are prepared in the event of an emergency.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Ready Campaign encourages people to take simple steps to be prepared. The campaign offers helpful information on making an emergency supply kit and developing an emergency plan. Additionally, MIT’s Age Lab offers helpful tips for older adults and caregivers preparing for emergencies.

New Health Care Law Brings Changes to Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period
Some things change, some stay the same—a statement that rings true for Medicare as it relates to the new health care law. Medicare beneficiaries should be aware of key changes related to Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period, November 15 through December 31, 2010, as it's just around the corner.
What's the same?
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period will be the same as it has been in the past, beginning on November 15 and ending on December 31. During this time, people have the opportunity to add, drop, or change their current prescription drug coverage and also select a health plan (Medicare Advantage Plan) for their 2011 coverage. For 2010, these dates are not changing as a result of the new heath care law.
When making a drug plan selection, Medicare beneficiaries should consider the cost of premiums, their own budgets, and their prescription needs. If considering a Medicare Advantage Plan for health care, individuals should make sure that their doctors accept that particular plan before enrolling in it.

From Executive Director Dan O'Leary
This November it's Easy as 1, 2, 3
Dear Beacon Readers,
On November 2nd, it’s very simple to remember how to vote. In fact, its as easy as 1, 2, 3. The Board of Directors of Mystic Valley Elder Services and I are writing to urge you to vote NO, NO, NO. Here’s why:
Sales Tax Questions 1 and 3: Since the beginning of 2009, elderly home care services have been cut by nearly $22 million. Because of the recession, the state has been losing revenue, and has had to reduce many important services—including help for seniors at home.
Bring Home Care Home
Dear Beacon Readers,
The waiting list to get into the state's home care program has swelled to more than 3,700 seniors (165 seniors right here in the MVES communities)—but millions in federal money to relieve pressure is sitting inside the State Home—unspent.

Job Hunting Tips for Older Adults
Question: I am 72-years-old and have been retired for nearly nine years. I think want to get back to work, but I don’t know where to start and can’t help but feel like I’ll have less of a chance landing a job than a younger applicant. On top of that, I don’t have a computer at home so I can’t search or apply online like the younger crowd does it these days. Do you have advice for older adults seeking employment in this tough job market?
Answer: Studies show that adults over the age of 50 do have a more difficult time entering or reentering the job force than younger people. But, don’t count yourself out because you’ve got more of something than younger workers—experience!
