Program Profile: The Elder Independence Fund

What if you really needed an item or service but couldn’t afford it on your own? Not too hard to imagine in these tough times. But what if you needed that item or service so desperately that your independence depended on obtaining it? This is a reality for some local elders. In November’s Program Profile we’re featuring MVES’ Elder Independence Fund, a program that helps elders in immediate need.

MVES’ Elder Independence Fund is an emergency fund used to purchase critical items or services for local, low-income elders. The fund helps elders who have an urgent need for an item that they can’t afford on their own. Without that item or service—and help from the Elder Independence Fund—an elder’s independence could be in jeopardy.

A President With Taste

It’s unlikely that you know Barbara Rougier, the MVES Nutrition Director who recently completed her tenure as president of the Mass Meals On Wheels Association (MMOW). Barbara didn’t make any televised primetime addresses during her two-year term, but her leadership of the statewide organization helped to improve the processes and products provided by nutrition programs across the state. Although you probably don’t know Barbara, it is likely that you know someone who enjoys Meals On Wheels or lunch at a senior dining site. You may have even had a taste of Barbara’s hard work.

Pick Your Plan: Medicare Open Enrollment

Apple picking. Pumpkin picking. Medicare Prescription Drug Plan picking? That’s right, because November 15 marks the beginning of Medicare’s Open Enrollment period. During Open Enrollment—November 15 through December 31, 2009—people with Medicare should carefully review their 2009 prescription drug coverage and pick the plan that they’d like to enroll in for 2010.

Every year during open enrollment Medicare gives people the opportunity to add, drop, or change their current prescription drug coverage.

From Executive Director Dan O'Leary

Dear Advocates,

As you may know, the governor announced a series of budget cuts at the end of October to bring state spending in line with expected revenues for the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2010. In summary, the cuts to key elder programs were not as great as were anticipated but none-the-less were still painful.

Fighting Forgetfulness

Question: I certainly don’t consider myself to be old, but at 65, it seems like I forget much more often than I used to. I forget small things—where I left the keys, whether I sent a thank-you note. I’ve seen my physician and she’s ruled out dementia. Is there anything I can do to prevent my memory from getting worse?

Answer: I’m glad that you sought a medical exam from your doctor—that would be my first suggestion to anyone experiencing forgetfulness. Dementia is very prevalent in our culture and I’m glad you were able to rule it out.
