Golden Issue Marks Changes
Ahead
Do you realize you’re reading the golden issue of The
Beacon? In this 50th edition of our electronic newsletter, we remain as committed to delivering up-to-date information to elders,
families, and caregivers and relaying other information about MVES’s services and initiatives as we were when the first issue was published in
2003.
While our commitment to our readers has been constant, The Beacon has seen some changes in its
day—different layouts and design, different publication schedules, and different article topics to name a few. (Click here to view The Beacon archives and see
the changes for yourself).

Program Profile:
The State Home Care Program
MVES
offers a variety of programs and services to help elders maintain their independence. With so many programs available, we recognize that sometimes
elders, families, and caregivers who are new to the elder care system may experience an information overload!
In a new,
reoccurring column in The Beacon, we’ll highlight an MVES program to briefly explain it in the simplest of terms. For our first
program profile, we’re featuring the State Home Care Program. The State Home Care Program is available for people who are struggling to maintain
their independence at home. When necessary daily activities become difficult, staying at home can be a serious challenge—without help, it may become impossible. The program operates with the belief that with the right home care services, elders can receive the help they need to remain safe and
independent at home.

From Executive Director Dan O'Leary I am happy to report that MVES has been named one of the “Top Places to Work in Massachusetts!” In the debut of an
employee-based survey project from The Boston Globe, MVES was ranked 17 on the overall list of 100,
as well as 7 on the Top 40 Small Workplaces list.
The Globe’s “Top Places to Work” recognizes the most progressive companies in the state based on employee opinions about
company leadership, compensation and training, diversity/inclusion, career development, family-friendly flexibility, and values and ethics. What an
honor!

Staying IN TOUCH For
Emergencies
Question: I live far away from my parents. They’re both in their 80s, are in relatively
good health, and still live in the same house that I grew up in. I’m concerned about the coming winter and its snow storms. My parents have
both aged some over the last year and I worry about what would happen in an emergency.
Answer: You should be commended for thinking ahead!
It’s important to plan for emergencies so that panic doesn’t ensue when they occur. No matter the nature of the emergency, there are
some steps that your parents can take to prepare. In fact, the National Association for Area Agencies on Aging recommends an acronym to help you
remember these steps. The phrase is IN TOUCH.
